Petrified Forest National Park
Approximately 26 miles east of Holbrook AZ, you will find an
unusual place with massive amounts of petrified wood lying around. This area is
known as the Petrified Forest. The land for this forest incubus 230 square
miles and has somewhat desert scenery surrounding the area. It is located next
to the Painted Desert (my next post). Fossils and fallen trees dot the land.
These trees once existed in the late Triassic Period which is over 225 million
years ago. Over time, those trees fell down and fossilized becoming petrified
wood. The park had problems with people stealing the wood remains for decades.
They say that the wood is cursed and should not be removed from the location.
Nowadays, you see fences in many areas preventing thieves from taking the wood.
