Wild West Fact: Feral Camels
At one time Feral camels were seen wandering aimlessly in the southwest desert. In 1856, the U.S. Camel Corps was created in Camp Verde, Texas. Around 66 camels were brought in from the Middle East to aid the army. These critters were hard to handle, spit on the men, and constantly threw up their food. After the war was over, most of the camels were sold or just simply ran off in the desolate southwest desert. It was in 1941 that the last of the Feral camels were spotted roaming the desert. Even though none of the camels are believed to be alive today, some have claimed to see their ghosts wandering through the hot barren lands.
