Tortilla Flat

Somewhere burrowed in the Superstition Mountains sits “an authentic remnant of an old west town” called, Tortilla Flat.  It first begun in 1904 as a stagecoach stop along the famous Apache Trail and managed to survive floods and fires.  Today, there are 6 known residents who are proud to call this place home.

Tortilla Flat is only a couple of miles from Canyon Lake, and along a winding road inside the mountain range.  We happen to be there on a fantastic weather day so the location was crowded.  We were able to find a parking space in front of the Mercantile/Gift Shop.  The entire place is on one side of the road with breathtaking views all around.  We decided to wander down the entire wood walkway until the end before stopping to get a bite at the Superstition Saloon and Restaurant.  All of the walls inside the establishment were covered with dollar bills and signed by the person or persons who stapled them there.  The dollars were from all over the world by the many travelers who stopped in.  We each had a burger which was huge and tasty.  The bar stools were saddles that you sit on while you enjoy a cold drink or brew.  The bathroom stall doors each had paintings of soil doves or dancehall girls from the neck down.  I just had to get a picture of myself as a saloon gal.  Some of the visitors were stopping inside the Country Store for a scoop of ice cream, but Sharon and I decided to check out the gift shop.  I was glad we did because I found a cute Larimar stone ring.  The store also has Native American merchandise, jewelry (or course), clothes, hats, and many more one-of-a-kind things.  Tortilla Flat is a great place to visit whenever you find yourself at the Superstition Mountains.

I can write a long involved description of Tortilla Flat’s history, but it would be better if you read what they wrote on their website:  http://www.tortillaflataz.com/
